Water dock grows in wet meadows, marshes, sedge fens, and shallow peatlands on wet mineral soil, muck or peat. It produces a tall flowering stalk that turns deep rust colored. The large oval leaf comes from the base, and has a unique appearance. Water dock does not spread.
